Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, was a man who desired to climb and conquer the mountain that God had given him in life; and though the journey would be long and hard, he would not rest until he was able to stand upon the summit of his mountain and take in the view.
Caleb lived during some of the most exciting moments in Israel's history as a fledgling nation. In his lifetime, he witnessed the divine judgments of God upon the land of Egypt in the form of the 10 plagues. He experienced, first-hand, the great exodus of the Hebrew people as they journeyed out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and across the wilderness. Caleb was there, at the foot of the mountain, when God delivered the law to His people at Mount Sinai; and he was also present when the Children of Israel finally entered the Promised Land of Canaan after wandering in the desert for 40 years.
As an 85-year-old man, nearing the end of his life, Caleb certainly had much to look back on and thank God for; however, Caleb was also looking ahead as he prepared for the final climb in his journey. God had promised him an inheritance in the land of Canaan; and by faith, Caleb sought to climb, conquer, and claim his mountain!
In Joshua 14:12, Caleb's final words are recorded in which he makes the following request: "Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day..."
