The event known as "obon" is like a memorial service for ancestors and people who have passed away. 先祖や亡くなった人たちを供養する行事を「お盆」と呼びます。
お盆は仏教の行事です。
お盆の時期は地域によって異なりますが、一般的には8月13日頃から16日頃です。
お盆には、先祖の霊が帰ってくると考えられているため、お寺や家庭に家族や親戚が集まり、お墓参りに行きます。お墓では、迎え火、送り火などさまざまなことを行い、先祖を供養します。
お盆には休みになる会社も多く、たいていのサラリーマンはこの時期に合わせて夏休みを取るため、里帰りや行楽地に出向くなど、お盆の時期には年に数度ある日本人の大移動が見られます。
