Copying Buddhist sutras is called shakyo and in Japan it typically refers to copying the Hannya Shingyo (The Great Heart of Wisdom Sutra).

仏教の経典を書き写すことを写経と呼び、日本では一般的に『般若心経』を書き写すことを指します。
元来、写経は僧侶にとって大事な修行の一つでしたが、写経をすることには功徳があるといわれることから、一般の人々の間でも行われています。
その目的は、心を清めてリラックスする、集中力や忍耐力を向上させる、きれいな字を書けるようにするなど、さまざまです。
写経には、経典を見ながら書き写す方法と、あらかじめ薄く書かれた文字をなぞる方法があります。
写経体験を実施している寺は多く、書き終えた写経は寺に納めるほか、持ち帰ることもできます。
