In contrast to the type of paper that originated in the West, there is also a type of paper made through a traditional Japanese manufacturing method called washi(Japanese paper).

西洋から伝わった洋紙に対し、日本古来の製法で作られた紙を和紙と呼びます。
和紙は三椏や楮、雁皮などを原料として、手漉 きと呼ばれる、非常に手間をかけた製法で作られます。
和紙は、水に強くて破れにくく、薄くて軽いのが特徴。書画や工芸に利用されるほか、世界中の文化財の修復にも使われています。
また、和紙は保存性に優れ、奈良県・東大寺の正倉院には、1200年以上前の和紙で作られた書物も残るほどです。
全国には約100種類もの和紙があるといわれます。このうち、島根県の石州半紙、岐阜県の本美濃紙、埼玉県の細川紙の3つは、ユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されています。
