Gion, located in Kyoto's Higashiyama, serves as Kyoto's bustling downtown area. 京都の東山に位置する祇園は、京都を代表する繁華街。舞妓さんに会える花街としても有名です。
鎌倉時代以降、八坂神社の門前町として栄えた祇園は、江戸時代になるとお茶屋が建ち並ぶ遊興の町として発展しました。
祇園は四条通を境に、南北に大きく分かれます。
北側はスナックや居酒屋などのネオンが輝く歓楽街。一方の南側は花見小路通を中心に、歴史を感じさせるお茶屋や料亭などが軒を連ねます。
昔から、祇園には政界や財界、芸能界などの一流どころが集い、遊興文化を育んできました。
