Following on from The Midas Legacy, Andy McDermott's new Wilde and Chase audiobook sees our daring duo on the trail of a strange, ancient weapon of immense power hidden in a lost city deep in the African jungle.

Nina Wilde is back on the hunt. Now a presenter of her own TV documentary series, Nina is in Jerusalem. Clues found at the Ark of the Covenant recovery site have led her to the ruins of the First Temple, buried beneath Temple Mount.

Within them, Nina spots an opening to a previously hidden chamber - a map room which contains a model of a mysterious city thought to contain a great yet dangerous power hidden by King Solomon himself. Analysing the clues, Nina believes that the city is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the most dangerous locations on Earth.

Eddie is in England with their daughter, Macy, but Nina's phone call is about to change everything. He has had his own problems in the DRC in the past and he isn't about to let Nina go there alone. Joining forces, Nina and Eddie are about to start a chain of events from which there might be no return....

I enjoyed listening to this latest Chase/Wilde adventure. Reminds me of the Saturday matinee cliffhangers I used to go to during my childhood.

I did start to get annoyed by Eddie repetitively referred to as the Yorkshireman. He was described as such at the beginning of the book and for those who have followed the series, we know Eddie is a Yorkshire man.

Fast-paced Chase and Wilde adventure

Eddie Chase and Nona Wilde save large swaths of the world in each novel, while simultaneously destroying property and killing dozens if not hundreds of bad guys. Guess what? They do it again here.

Minor spoilers follow:

This time they are not up against shadowy billionaires with Bond-Villain like plans, this time their up against a James Bond like figure himself (although not nearly so nice). This is referenced by the characters themselves on a number of occasions poking a bit of fun at all the standard 007 tropes.

To me, this seemed a bit more subdued that the usual Wilde/Chase novel for some reason. Not sure why it came across that way, certainly not due to a lack of action. Maybe it was a few less "No F***ing Way!" moments in this one. But then again, it's tough to beat the situations in the previous novels, the last one in particular. Still a lot of fun.

I like these characters a lot and hope that they continue to save the world (while blowing up big chunks of it) for a long time to come.

PS...I was really shocked when they radically changed a major metropolitan skyline this time. Threatening to do that in previous novels was on thing. The author really did it this time!

Bottom line:
If you follow the series - read this book next
If you don't follow the series - start on the first book (Hunt For Atlantis) and work your way up to this book.
You will be rewarded with hours of very enjoyable mayhem.

Waiting for the next volume to see where things go from here. I think the author is playing the long game and is setting us up for a wild (Pun intended) ride.

Not the same old story great ending. New fans will read this first then want to devour the rest of the series.
