Instead, what I got felt like a rushed, surface-level book report with zero soul behind it.
The biggest issue was the decision to use what sounds like an AI-generated narrator. That choice completely killed the experience. The delivery was robotic, flat, and emotionless, which is the exact opposite of what you’d expect from a story about Kobe Bryant.
It gets worse. The narrator consistently mispronounces names throughout the book. Kobe’s name alone was said incorrectly multiple times. Then you’ve got major NBA figures like LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Kawhi Leonard, and Coach Mike Krzyzewski all being butchered. That’s not a small mistake, that’s basic credibility.
The pacing, inflection, and delivery felt unnatural. Numbers were read like disconnected digits instead of being spoken fluidly. There was no storytelling rhythm, no intensity, no respect for the subject matter.
Content-wise, nothing stood out. There was no depth, no personal insight, nothing that couldn’t have been found with a quick search online. It didn’t feel like a tribute or a study of Kobe. It felt like someone checked a box and pushed it out.
If you’re going to tell the story of someone like Kobe Bryant, you need precision, passion, and intentionality. This had none of that.
One star. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone looking for a real understanding of the Mamba Mentality.
