From fat girl to thin, from red hair to mud brown, from London to Toronto, from Polish count to radical husband - Joan Foster is utterly confused by her life of multiple identities. She decides to escape to an Italian hill town to take stock of her life. But first, she must organize her own death.

I found this book confusing to listen to. It switches back and forth between the book the main character is writing to the main story line. Then on top of that I just didn’t care about any of the characters. The narrator didn’t help matters any. It was as if she was simply reading the book. Her voice had no emotion. She just read. She did do character voices but the book has very little dialogue. When I chose this book I did so on the basis of all the five star ratings. I’m giving it a three.

To me, the story rambled a lot. I found it hard to connect with the charachter and her struggle.for self realization.

I have always loved this book and looked forward to hearing it performed. However the narrator was terrible: over-enunciated everything and stripped the humor right out of a great story. I cringed every time she clipped out ‘Terramoto.’ Made me hate the character by the end. Read the book instead.

Performance ruined a great story

Jumped about too much for me and personality of some of foreign character didn't seem genuine.

The character

I wanted a new beginning for Joan. It seems clear she'll repeat old patterns with a new person. Ending let me down.

Good story but I don't like the ending.
