Why must a widow newly emerged from mourning be invited to every wedding in the realm?

Lady Violet Belmaine ponders that conundrum while traveling from London to rural Scotland at the invitation of an old friend. Escorted by her dashing physician friend, Hugh St. Sevier, Violet prepares to again subject herself to a nuptial celebration—except that the groom fails to appear.

Matters become more interesting when Violet discovers that Sebastian MacHeath is laird of the nearest castle and well acquainted with the bride and her family. Mysterious cousins, surly neighbors, and appearances much at variance with the facts all confound Violet’s efforts to find the missing groom, as well as any designs she might have on her handsome escort!

I love Lady Violets investigations. This one has proven to be quite entertaining. Violet is invited to an old school friends wedding. She asks Hugh to travel with her. After they arrive it seems that the bridegroom is not to be found. Violet and Hugh become lovers and this helps Violet to start healing from the emotional abuse her late husband had put her through.

This heroine driven series is uniquely different from her previous books which I just can’t get enough of. Even though I was convinced from the first story in the series I didn’t know how I was going to like this. But I do! I like Lady Violet more with every story. Clever mysteries. I like both love interests and can’t decide who I should want to ‘win her hand.’ But I’ve got a favorite.

I didn’t like this story at all. Lady Violet has turned into a complete nosy Parker, and I really object to the overly descriptive sex. It seems like a complete departure from the first two books in this series. I probably will not continue to buy these books.
