THE DAZZLING NEW NOVEL FROM THE MASTER OF CRIME

He had been here, that was clear from the marks in the dust. And he had been alone.

In a dying town, Ro Crowley waits for her son on the evening of his 21st birthday.

But Sam never comes home. His footprints in the dust of three abandoned houses offer the only clue to his final movements. One set in. One set out.

Five long years later, Ro returns to Carralon Ridge for the annual memorial of Sam's disappearance. The skeletal community is now an echo of itself, having fractured under the pressure of the coal mine operating on its outskirts.

But Ro still wants answers. Only a few people remain. If the truth is to be found in that town, does it lie among them?

Once again Jane Harper brilliantly sets up place. She is a master at this.
I really enjoy her books and again this is very atmospheric and well written.
But I just felt sad all the way through. The loss of the son, the town, the way of life.
So much heartbreak. I was relieved when it was over.

Atmospheric and heavy hearted.

Ending too rapidly embodied a life goes on theme’ .While reader was still wrestling with the tragedy.

Brilliantly placed subtly revealed never obvious. Sadness for Sam lingered after the ending.

This novel takes some getting into - it's slow at the outset, but possibly only because her earlier books are quite different.
The plot is developing the whole way throughout the book - which may seem a strange thing to write, but when you read it, you'll understand. Nevertheless, the Harper style is, as ever, attention-getting and
-holding.
The ending is heart-breaking and heart-mending at the same time; and it is SO worth it ...

I'm a Jane Harper fan forever !
