As one of the greatest novels of all time, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables takes the listeneron a journey into the turbulent Parisian underworld. With breathtaking realism, Hugo recreates the dark world of the 1832 uprising and the sad but meaningful struggle between good and evil.

In Les Misérables, Victor Hugo introduces one of the most beloved fictional characters of classic literature, Jean Valjean, who is best known for his imprisonment for the minor offense of stealing a loaf of bread. Through the pages of this novel, Inspector Javert relentlessly pursues Valjean, determined that he should not escape punishment. Although this is a highly entertaining novel, Les Misérables was obviously the method Hugo used for criticizing French politics and the criminal justice system of the time. Not only does this pull at the heart; but it also draws the listener into an entirely different world and time.

Loved the story & the intricacies of all characters, though the narration I found a bit lacking. I may just be picky, but there was hardly a difference between one voice & another who was not named Javert or Thénardier.

I am so glad I chose this version of Les Mis. I read mixed reviews on the narrator but decided to go with it because I really liked the sample. So glad I did! Philippe Duquenoy brought the characters to life exactly how I imagined them. I have seen the Broadway musical several times and I loved it each time; however I had never read the book. Wow! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time - especially toward the end as the book goes beyond the ending of the musical. I enjoyed his performance so much that I am now listening to him read The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I’m only a few hours in but I love this one just as well! Thank you, sir! Great job!!

What a great narrator!
