In less than a moment, unexplained intentions, then murder, upend life in Posadas County, New Mexico.

Posadas County, sitting along New Mexico's southern border, has enjoyed a surge in visitors, jobs, and prosperity since rancher Miles Waddell used much of his inherited half billion to create an internationally renowned astronomy complex atop Torrance Mesa. Passion, not profit, drives Waddell. Yet benefits include a narrow-gauge train linking the village of Posadas to NightZone. It's a boon to employees and for nature lovers, hikers, and birders as well as star gazers.

A ripple of unease is felt across the county with the arrival of developer - no, speculator - Kyle Thompson. Why did he and his wife quietly purchase a large scrubby acreage to the north of NightZone? Any light pollution would jeopardize Waddell's success. Lights are like cancer cells. One comes, others follow.

Unease grows with a drive-by shoot-up at the Posadas Register, its 25 shots wounding a reporter and the paper's editor. Sheriff Bob Torrez and Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman see a connection to NightZone...and worse, a connection with Torrez's own nephew. Why? And then murder strikes....

This is another good book about Estelle Reyes Gusman. This series is easy to follow and get wrapped up in. I have liked all of the books in this series. The first Ten or so books is about Bill Gastner. Then Estelle Reyes Gusman takes over. Bill is still there just retired. Rusty Nelson was the narrator for the books about Bill. Then when Estelle takes over Stephanie Brush narrated her books. This book has both in it . Bill and Estelle. Also Rusty and Stephanie both narrated this book. It made me like it more. I love both narrators. This is easy to follow and held my attention.

Stephanie Brush did her always great job of narrating. Steven Havill’s writing is extraordinary. I loved his bringing references to Anna Hocking and Josiah Bennett’s son-in-law from previous books into the story. I practically have all his books memorized! The characters are almost like an extended family!

Having Rusty Nelson voice Bill Gastner’s lines. Rusty Nelson IS BILL GASTNER!

This latest adventure is undoubtedly the very best is Havill’s novels. It gave me great pleasure to spend the time reading about my friends in Posadas County.

Les is FAR more

The lady narrator read some parts a bit too loud. In addition, she took some liberties and reworded the text to avoid reading the curse words. I personally didn’t care for that.

Pretty Loud

As always, I enjoyed hearing more about the lives of the people in Posadas County. But once again I am distracted by Stephanie Brush’s consistent mispronunciation of certain Spanish words and other commonly known words. It’s comical but annoying. I cannot understand why no editor or reviewer has ever told her of her mistakes. I also thought adding in the male narrator for Bill Gastner was jarring and was not necessary for this story.
