As a single mom rebuilding my life from scratch, I don’t need help. And I definitely don’t need the attention of a six-foot-three maple farmer with a beard and a hero complex who looks at me like I’m a problem he didn’t sign up for.

My landlord is broad-shouldered, permanently unimpressed, and entirely too comfortable telling me when I’m wrong. I think he’s grumpy, rigid, and overprotective. He thinks I’m chaos in Crocs.

Falling for Josh Lawrence was never part of the plan.

But then he starts showing up.

For my son when he’s overwhelmed.

For my daughters when they need someone steady.

And for me when my hands won’t stop shaking.

I didn’t come to Vermont looking for a protector. I don’t need rescuing. But somewhere between harvest festivals, pumpkin canoe races, and quiet mornings in the sugar shack, the man I swore was just an annoyance becomes my safe place.

And when my dangerous past resurfaces and threatens the new life I’ve built, the grumpy maple farmer next door becomes my fiercest protector, ready to stand by my side while I fight for my family.

Because it turns out maple farmers are a lot like their trees: quiet, stubborn, and surprisingly sweet when the pressure builds.

Series Blurb: Welcome to Maplewood, Vermont. America’s Most Charming Small Town has some dark, sticky secrets. Come for the maple syrup, festivals, and cheese wars; stay for swoon.

Ohhh this book and audiobook were a masterpiece! Total perfection it is duet narration so it’s even better. Emma Wilder & Sean Masters really nailed it as Celine and Josh. Love their voices and how the worked out together. I love a good single mom story, and this one was definitely a hit. Josh was better than I imagined he would be. All grumpy, mysterious, and handsome, and to make him even better, he turned into a swooning, protective, and sweet man, especially with the kids. Love how he cared for them and how he managed to make them all feel special and loved. And Celine, what a beautiful surprise. Love how dedicated and loving she is with her kids. She is a wonderful mom and person. She deserves all the love and happiness in the world. The kids are amazing. I love how Ellie takes charge of everything and how she teamed up with her mom to take care of the family. Maggie is a wonderful girl, full of life and happiness. Julian, Julian is a special kid and deserves the right person in his corner. Thankfully, Josh is one of them. And Betsy Ross is a character herself, hahaha hilarious. This story is so good. I really enjoyed reading this one. The town of Maplewood is still one of my favorites. Can’t wait to read the next one and know what’s going to happen with the MMF and FMC, oh, and the mystery too.

Ohhh this book and audiobook were a masterpiece!

Emma Wilder and Sean Masters were the perfect casting for Celine and Josh. Not only were they exactly how these characters sounded in my head when I first read the book, but they also did such an amazing job of bringing them and all the side characters to life.

This was such a powerful story. I absolutely loved Celine's resilience and how real her character felt. I honestly feel like the author did an excellent job of putting the feelings of a woman in this situation to paper. How difficult it is to open up and let yourself feel and trust again.

And then we have Josh. This grumpy recluse who didn't want anything to do with anyone, yet found himself trapped in the orbit of Celine and her kids. The patience and understanding of this man was everything. I absolutely loved the way he was there for all three kids in ways that they had never experienced from a man before. How he was willing to wait for Celine for as long as she needed. Top-tier book boyfriend.

Quote: “You don’t get it, do you? You’ve done so much for me. You’ve encouraged me to be brave. You make me feel strong and səxy. And you helped me get to a place where I could heal. Where I could finally move forward.”

“Turns out trauma is a great motivator, and farmwork is cheaper than therapy.”

Oh my goodness these Lawrence Men. They are amazing. I thought Jasper was special but lordy Josh heard that and said “hold my beer”.

We met the FMC Celine, back in the Maine Lumberjack series in Pain In The Axe, she is Chloe’s sister. We saw her battle her ex husband and leave all that chaos behind. Now she’s settled in Maplewood with her three kids and has found her place. Josh has a past of his own and watching them both overcome the trauma to trust and love again was beautiful.

I loved Celine's strength even if her independence sometimes causes problems. She can do all the hard things. I absolutely adored Josh, especially his interactions with Julian, Celine's neurodivergent son. It just melted my heart to see how he fell in love with her kids as well.

This book expanded the scope of the town of Maplewood. Adding new characters and a deeper understanding of the people who live there. As with the other series there is an underlying mystery that has continued through this story. It’s a journey and I can’t wait to ride it through to the end!

I’ve read this story before except it was whiskey (bourbon?, does it matter? This was still the same story just a different liquid) and not maple syrup. The FMC was absolutely AWFUL & the narrator was the only saving grace. The MMC was less awful but still not insufferable. I was not fond of the representation of parenting a special needs child because it wasn’t authentic. I also HATED when the FMC told her child their father was a bad person, regardless of if it’s true or this is fiction, crap people are just crap people. If this book hadn’t been included in aisle plus & I had paid for this book I would have been a very dissatisfied reader. The narrators were the only reason I didn’t give this 1* all around.

Not revolutionary
