Now updated with a new chapter

In his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life, from his roller-coaster lifestyle as shown in the film Rocketman, to becoming a living legend.

Christened Reginald Dwight, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of 23, he was performing his first gig in America, facing an astonished audience in his bright yellow dungarees, a star-spangled T-shirt, and boots with wings. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.

His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with song-writing partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, and George Michael, to setting up his AIDS Foundation to conquering Broadway with Aida, The Lion King, and Billy Elliot the Musical. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for more than a decade.

In Me, Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble, and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you by a living legend.

This book is an amazing look at one of the world’s most amazing people. I wish it had been read by Elton but Taron Egerton is the next best thing. Between the movie Rocketman and this autobiography I now understand this fabulous man whom I have loved for 45 years so much better than ever before. Elton helped me get into recovery 22 years ago, though he doesn’t know it. The recovery parts of the book and the movie touched me to my heart and soul. Other than my wonderful wife and my amazing sponsor of 22 years, John, no one has given me more or meant more to me than this chap I’ve never met (though I still dream of doing so). I love you Sir Elton Hercules John Reggie Kenneth Dwight, and I always will.

A Book as Extraordinary as Elton

I LOVE this book. The story itself is incredible and is so perfectly Elton. The story structure and self deprecating humor is so authentic that even though it’s not Elton reading it, it sounds just like he’s telling the story to an old friend.

The openness and honesty Elton gives his story is so refreshing for a celebrity biography. He doesn’t hide his “dark” secrets or the unpleasant choices he made. He lays it all out in a frank and beautiful way.

The narrating is perfect, and I really enjoy all the different accents he does to fit each person. Having Taron Egerton narrate it was a stroke of genius. You can tell he really knows Elton, and the way Elton would speak.

This audiobook is the perfect marriage between story and narration. It’s a MUST listen to for any Elton John Fan.

Amazing Story, paired with an Incredible Narrator

What a life! I met Elton John when I was working at record store in Atlanta while I was in college. All I did was help him find a Billy Holiday box set, but I will never forget it. He was trying to be on the downlow, but he was wearing a harlequin suit which made me wonder how he thought he wouldn't get recognized! When he talk about a similar thing ( involving harlequin leggings) in the book, I howled with laughter!

His memories with Freddie Mercury made me cry. AIDS SUCKS!

An amazing life story told by the man himself. As raw and honest as any autobiography I've ever encountered. Elton John could have written his memoir any time in the last 50 years and it would have been great. There's something sublime in his having waited until his later years. There are more stories to tell and there is added sight that comes with distance and maturity.

Taron Egerton's narration was top notch. He was so personal and believable reading Elton's 1st person narrative and the emotions were beyond perfect. He perfectly captured everything from big moments, the colorful accents, the dry wit, small personal introspections, and huge bombastic personality. Elton John's layers created what must have been a huge challenge for narration and Egerton rises to the occasion perfectly.

Incredible life

Loved the performance and the brutal honesty. As a fan since the first I appreciate that was not a sugar coated bio but a put it out there and let the fan’s know. Glad he is still standing.

This is his story
