“A story that encompasses a lifetime. It is rich in imagery and sometimes light and funny, despite the seriousness of the backdrop of a Cuba still in chains.” Susana Jiménez-Mueller, international podcaster of The Green Plantain – The Cuban Series Project and author of Now I Swim.

“An amazing story that... takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows, keeping them wanting to know what's around the corner. Then, when the ride seems to end, there's one last surprise waiting.” Conchita Hernández Hicks, author of Leaving Havana.

Memoirs of a Pianist

The Remarkable Story of a Cuban Prodigy

Before the Cuban Revolution reshaped the island, young Milagros grew up surrounded by music and possibility. As a child, she accompanied her parents to elegant gatherings at Havana’s famed Hotel Nacional, mesmerized by the musicians whose melodies filled the grand halls. It was there that her lifelong love of music was born.

By the age of fifteen, Milagros’s extraordinary talent earned her a place in a professional band, launching her into the vibrant world of Havana’s entertainment scene. Soon she was performing for foreign dignitaries and traveling abroad as a cultural representative of Cuba throughout the communist bloc.

But while her musical career flourished, her personal life began to fracture.

One by one, members of her family left Cuba for the United States—cousins, nephews, and eventually her own brother—each departure deepening the loneliness she felt on the island she could not abandon.

While performing at a Havana hotel, Milagros falls deeply in love with a man from Czechoslovakia. Yet the political realities of the time force her to face an impossible choice: follow the man she loves or remain with the parents who depend on her.

In choosing family, she sacrifices the love of her life.

Still, the music must go on.

Through decades of separation, hardship, and longing, Milagros continues to play—holding onto the fragile hope that one day she might reconnect with the love she once let slip away.

Based on a true story, Memoirs of a Pianist is a moving portrait of music, sacrifice, exile, and the enduring power of love.
