Arundhati Roy’s first work of memoir, this is a soaring account, both intimate and inspiring, of how the author became the person and the writer she is, shaped by circumstance, but above all by her complex relationship to the extraordinary, singular mother she describes as ‘my shelter and my storm’. I have long admired Arundhati Roy, and this book offers a beautiful, in-depth account of the life of the author herself—her origins, her intellectual formation, and the forces that shaped her worldview. It helps the reader understand not only what she writes, but where she is coming from.

I deeply admire her philosophies, her uncompromising views, and above all, the courage she has consistently demonstrated through her activism. Much has been said about her relationship with her mother, often from opposing perspectives. Yet, when viewed within the South Asian social context of the 60s and 70s, the grievances Roy expresses are not unusual. Many children of that era endured similar parental behaviours. What sets Roy apart is her extraordinary sensitivity and intellect—qualities that made her deeply scarred by her mother’s harshness, and also gave her the courage to rebel. Most of us, shaped by the same environment, did not dare to do so.

Roy herself admits to having led a reckless life in her youth. I see this not as a flaw, but as an extension of her fearlessness—an unwillingness to live quietly or obediently within imposed boundaries. That very courage, along with the risks she took, is what ultimately made her who she is today.

As with her previous works, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It reaffirmed my admiration for Arundhati Roy as both a thinker and a writer. Among her books, this one is my second favourite after 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness'.
