Forced to flee Revolutionary France after the brutal guillotining of her beloved father, Isabella de Savigny arrives at Nethergate, the Suffolk house of her cousin, hoping for sympathy and succour.

Instead, as a poor relation, she is forced to live the life of a servant and suffer the casual cruelty of lady’s maid Martha Pratt. When she is seduced and abandoned by the son of the house, Isabella is forced to marry Martha’s brother, and her struggle to survive truly begins. However, her misery is lessened when her daughter is born, and for her sake she decides to fight back against a hostile world.

Really enjoyed this audio book!
I had it for several years sitting in my library (of over 2500!) and I thought I didn't , well, would not enjoy the narrator. But as with many stories once you start and can get to know your first character or two it's your friend!
I was so sorry to hear it end! Now I MUST have another Norah Lofts novel!

Fantastic

nobody gets a break in this book with no love no friendships only hurt and misfortune the main characters are not too likable and have self entitlements written all over them good writing not boring but I didn't get anything from this book
