It is New Year's Eve, nearly six weeks into an off-and-on blizzard that has locked Alaska down, effectively cutting it off from the outside world. But now there are reports of a plane down in the Quilak mountains. With the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board - responsible for investigating aviation incidents) unable to reach the crash site, ex-trooper Jim Chopin is pulled out of retirement to try to identify the aircraft, collect the corpses, and determine why no flight has been reported missing. But Jim discovers survivors: two children who don't speak a word of English. Meanwhile, PI Kate Shugak receives an unexpected and unwelcome accusation from beyond the grave - a charge that could change the face of the Park forever.

Dana Stabenow has done it again, she’s created another story filled with all the mystery and intrigue as in previous installments. Marguerite Gavin, as always, breathes life into the storyline. I’m anxiously waiting fir the next in series.

Loved it

I've read all Dana's books.
All the characters are to rich and full, I feel that I know them. My "Mutt" was named Lakota, half wolf and half husky. He was my best friend for 11 years. I had wanted to move to Alaska when they were giving land. Never made it but these special books made me wish I could have. Dana is blessed.

Another great book from Dana Stabenow! I love following the characters as they move from book to book.

I've followed Kate from book 1 into this book released in 2020. I'm amazed at writers' abilities to keep characters fresh and interact with current US and international issues.

Stabenow brings 21st century issues into the park and Kate's life. Drugs/substance abuse, child abuse, spousal abuse, immigration, racial inequality have all been woven into plot lines. Readers know Kate's struggle with being seen as "less than" because of her Native American heritage.

I don't see Stabenow's latest book as departure from anything written prior. Corrupt politicians and powerful people are always found in her books. I am impressed with Stabenow's ability to make Kate fresh, vital and a warrior against injustice, even though Kate knows she often is limited in her ability to change more than her world.

5 stars from me. Yes, a few audio issues are present. But easily overlooked as I am a huge fan of Maugarite Gavin.

This was great. Felt just like old times. No more almost succeeding in killing Kate and Mutt. Nice seeing all the supporting characters including the awful Jane Morgan. hahaha

Wonderful narration as always.
