Xander
There’s something seriously wrong with me.
For once, I’m not talking about the health anxiety that randomly pops up and wreaks havoc on my life. I'm talking about, well, everything else.
All my roommates have found someone to love them, and it hurts to see the guys who used to have me at the center of their worlds pair off and grow up, especially when it’s a reminder of how alone I've always been. I’ve always had an issue with relationships. With forming a connection with people outside of Seven, but this is more.
Because I want to find my someone.
Except the one person my brain has latched onto is the one person I can never have. The one person who’s there to help me when my panic attacks get too much.
Nurse Derek.
Derek
I should never have offered to treat Xander Moore.
And now here I am years later, my life on hold, while I wait day in and day out for the call that Xander needs me. It always comes, and I always answer, but I’m starting to dread those visits.
Lately, I’m looking at Xander in a way a medical professional should never look at their patient.
When Xander starts volunteering at the same nursing home that I do, I get to see a new side of him. The artistic, charismatic side that draws the residents in. I get glimpses of a man who’s so much more than his anxiety, and it does nothing to help my feelings for him.
Lines begin to blur and I have no choice but to stop treating him. That at least allows us to be friends. The only problem is, being friends isn’t enough for either of us.
It’s wrong, unethical, and unprofessional, but my heart won’t listen. It’s decided on Xander, and it doesn’t want to wait. Neither does Xander.
But if I want to keep my job, I have to resist.
I just wish he didn’t make that so difficult.

The storyline had some angst from both the main characters (Xander and Derek) for one another. However, I gravitated toward their love story and very much supported the development and growth of the romantic relationship between them.
I will say, Xander's behavior came off as a bit annoying through varying parts of the book, seeing as how this nearly 30 year older man had, what I would call, temper tantrums quite often. That was not surprising behavior from Xander because he acted that way in the previous four books, at times. The difference in this book is that there was alot more of that behavior on display. That said, as the storyline continued, more sides of Xander were revealed.
It was nice to be introduced to him outside of the limited characteristic behaviors that the reader was afforded in the previous books. Getting a better understanding of Xander outside of his normal limitations within the Big Bertha house, away from the Bertha Boys, out own his own, and in his artistic element was nice. It gave me a sense of hope regarding his personal growth. It supported the idea that Xander could potentially flourish on his own; having confidence in being able to do so without constantly being tethered to and relying on the Bertha Boys, and more specifically relying on Seven and Molly.
Initially, what seemed like Xander's physical attraction to and crush on Derek turned out to be true and deep feelings. His feelings were not tied to his incessant need to vye for the Berta Boys' attention to verbally and physically show their acceptance of and loved for him, which was refreshing.
Derek was a lovely character to "get to know" on more than the surface level. He was great at his job as a Nurse. He went out of his way to care for Xander. He even went as far as rearranging his life (i.e., where he lived, where he worked, where he worked out, where he did extracurricular activities, etc.), so that he could be in close proximity if Xander needed him. But, more than that, Derek truly and deeply cared for Xander.
Derek's feelings were not singularly tied to his attraction to Xander, which was evident. Derek's feelings ran much deeper, they burrowed into his marrow, burrowed into his very soul, and he instinctively took on the role of a protector; readily showing concern for Xander's overall mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
I loved how Derek set boundaries, demanded respect, spoke up, and took action when no one else in the Big Bertha house would not do so, as far as Xander getting prifessional help from a therapist. Derek loved Xander, in a way that was not easily or outwardly expressed at the onset, but that evetuallycould not be hidden or contained. Derek was exactly what Xander did not fully realize that he wanted and needed in a partner.
While he was initially given an ultimatum, Xander finally took steps in the "right direction" to see a therapist and got the help that he so desperately needed. Doing so opened the flood gates, so to speak, for Xander and Derek and to truly explore their path toward a future together, with less barriers along the way. It also helped to lessen the emotional load that Seven and Molly had been carrying, whilst striving to show support for Xander.
Through it all, I rooted for Xander's and Derek's Happily Ever After (HEA). I was genuinely happy when it came to fruition because they deserved it. This book was an easy read and there were several parts that gave me the "good feels". I would recommend reading it to close out the Accidental Love book series.
