Leo the Primus Pilus of the Third Britannorum Cohort under Stillicho receives his retirement papers and land grant to a small farm in Ad Fines Pannonia. He gets more than he bargained for and has to establish himself amid conflicts with the church, Roman officials and warring tribes in a fragmenting Empire in the borderlands between East and West.

The book traces his rise from retired veteran to independent warlord and the growth of his settlement in Ad Fines to become the town of Nova Fines with the help of his faithful comrades Antonius and Syagrius and the love of his life Dragana a Slav woman he rescues from slavery.

This is a short story based on characters first introduced in the Dark age novel "Evening of Empire" and seeks to explain to the listeners of the original novel what happened to them when they left Britannia.
