From the author of the beloved national bestseller Migrations, a pulse-pounding new novel set in the wild Scottish Highlands.

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect?

Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

I almost Didn’t listen to this book as some of the reviews talked about it’s darkness however I found it to be enthralling. Good narration, haunting story. Difficult to put down!

Haunting

Warning, there are scenes of heavy abuse and rape in this book. If you can handle that, its a great book, but halfway through I thought it was really bad because it felt like nonstop anger for angers sake, but if you read to the end its satisfying. overall good read if you have the stomach for it

A friend recommended this author to me some time ago and since wolves seem to be a timely topic, I decided to indulge my inner howl. Once There Were Wolves is a thriller hidden behind an ode to nature in all its glory (and violence). The novel is beautifully written from the perspective of a true naturalist, as Inti attempts to revive the population of wolves in the countryside of Scotland while simultaneously trying to make sense of her own existence. Vivid descriptions of landscapes, stomach-churning details of nature’s violent norms, and soulful expressions of love (both human and canine) are woven together with the underlying murder mystery. There were many moments of wincing during this novel, but there were also smiles and tears. This one is well worth reading, and I will circle back to her preceding novel soon, Migrations. For now, one thing is for sure… I am on team wolf.

Honestly, had a struggle to listen at first then it was just an absolute mind bender.

Mesmerizing

Wonderful information about wolves and the life in northern Scotland, but the story twists weirdly and the ending is not believable

Good premise but …,
