In this portal fantasy, an accountant reincarnated as a fae assassin must battle, barter, and grind to survive in a world filled with magical dangers.

When forensic accountant SJ is crushed by a rogue tree on her way home from the local pub, her death is as absurd as it is abrupt. But fate has a twisted sense of humour: instead of being sentenced to eternal oblivion, SJ's reborn in Amathera—a vibrant fantasy landscape full of magic, monsters, and a game-like System that really wishes she hadn't read the fine print.

Armed with her sassy and overly sarcastic AI companion, Dave, and the questionable skills of a fae assassin, SJ is thrust into this mystical new world. But there's one problem: she never agreed to the terms and conditions, and now she's the one person operating completely free of the System's rules. Drawing the attention of local gods, dragons, and everything in between, she's destined to become an Amatherean celebrity.

With oddities such as high-level enemies and unique gear drops at every turn, finding her footing will be no easy task in this place where reputation matters. SJ will need Dave's guidance if she wants to level up and survive the challenges thrown her way. Only then can she help the inhabitants of her quaint starter town of Killic and begin to uncover the complex mysteries of Amathera.

And as outside pressures mount, SJ's starting to realize her death was only the first glitch in the System . . .

I tried to stick it out and I know Dave is written to be annoying but the author did a bit too good of a job of it. an hour in and I skipped ahead ten chapters to see if Dave was still around, he was, so I think I'll have to give up.

I gave it 5 stars because it's technically what the author intended and is well written as such. Just personally I can't stand the annoying AI. everything else is great.

I can't listen to Dave anymore

The world building mixed with the personal flair is Perfect. The build up and balance throughout is Perfect not to dull or to much kill action. 9,9/10 only because i hate spiders 🫣

Wow, I read this one on Royal Road and loved it then, but now it's perfection.

The characters are so well written and thought out. Yes, Dave is a jerk in the beginning, but he grows so much as a character and his friendship with SJ evolves into something really special. SJ's character is one of my favorites, I love her care for all of the other character, while still being a strong force to be reckoned with. You feel for all of the characters, even the secondary ones.

Loved the setting of the starter town, and the adventures SJ goes on. The descriptions are gorgeous, you feel like you're right there with her adventuring. There are scenes that will make you laugh, cheer for the good guys, and maybe even shed a tear.

Bosloe did an amazing job writing this book. The whole story is so well done, I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us on SJ's journey.

Amazing start to a series!
