They crossed the stars to build a new home. But by the time they arrived, humanity was already a ghost.

After the harrowing journey of the Aurora across centuries and light-years, Captain Morrow and her mismatched crew hoped to find an untouched world ripe for hope and rebuilding. Instead, they awaken to a silent planet—its cities shattered, its stations derelict, and the only survivor a centuries-old, half-human being whose memories might be as dangerous as they are vital.

Determined to understand their fate and claim a place in this impossible future, Morrow’s crew must navigate the shattered legacy of a colony that grew—and fell—while they drifted in the dark. As Aurora’s team repairs ancient stations and sifts through the haunted wonders and buried horrors of a lost civilization, they begin to unlock forbidden technologies and forgotten truths—the very advances that may have doomed those who came before.

But every unlocked door has its price. Their efforts rouse echoes that were better left asleep, attracting the attention of powers both human and alien, and reveal that the colony’s destruction was no accident. Amidst shifting alliances and the emergence of post-human factions, new friendships and old traumas must be tested again.

Now, the Aurora’s crew must decide: will they rebuild the gates that connect lost worlds, risking the notice of unknowable cosmic rivals? Or will humanity die quietly in the ruins, out of time and out of reach?

BROKEN GATES continues the sweeping saga begun in Launch Point, probing the edges of loyalty, identity, and sacrifice as humanity’s last lifeboat collides with the inexorable currents of a universe that refuses to stand still. The path home has vanished—but the journey is far from over.

I do hope there will be more adventures. I feel like I am a part of this journey with them.

What an adventure

Usually these free books with a virtual voice are not good, this one actually is! I thought the second book was even better then the first, which was very well done. I really like the author's writing style, his characters speak and act like real people, not superheros or complete morons. The progression of both books is a little slow but that's a good thing, he takes the time to let the reader get to know the characters in more than a superficial level. I hope there is a book three in the making because I look forward to listening. Hopefully I will pay for the third book because that means a major publisher has taken an interest and supports the authors work.

The story started out strong and was intriguing enough to grab my attention, but it quickly became scattered and somewhat predictable and failed to offer anything particularly new or original.

For me, the narrator's voice and performance account for at least half of the enjoyment of an audiobook. Unfortunately, the AI narration was a major distraction. It lacked the emotion, nuance, emotional connection with the characters and the natural flow that a skilled human narrator brings to a story.

I really tried to stick with it, hoping the story or narration would improve, but I couldn't get past the halfway point. While the premise had potential, the combination of a predictable plot and AI narration made it impossible for me to fully engage with the book.
