Lee is tired of the monarchy in Darvist and since Anna has transformed into a female elf, he decided they should explore more of the planet. Bala has decided to settle down in Denshu with the blacksmith, Liam. Lee was intrigued when he saw the structures of Ethralin. His Mage Light Company is doing well and he planned to ask Sprann and Perene to join them. His first experience in Ethralin was to waylay a local and gain the language. He inadvertently waylaid a spy from a neighboring kingdom to Ethralin and learned three languages and more about the politics of the region than he expected. The people have some other ability besides magic -- it isn't technology either -- yet they can fly without mechanisms. He and Anna have to learn to navigate this society that is threatened by neighboring countries.

Lee falls for a local which complicates a lot because her father can read minds and is brilliant with few social skills. Lee thought he was powerful with his tech and his magic -- he is -- but it may not be enough to survive a different society. He is still trying to keep a low profile and that hasn't worked well for him in the past.

The 1st 2 audiobooks were done by actors and actresses and was spectacular, this 3rd book was done in “virtual voice” and while I enjoyed the overall story, the voice used was very monotonous and did not even hint at any inflections or emotions. Thankfully it was free because I would never pay for it.

A great story told in monotone
