Quo Vadis, best known for its star-studded 1951 film version, was first published in 1896 and contributed to the author’s Nobel Prize for Literature of 1905.
Set in the latter years of the reign of Roman Emperor Nero, the plot concerns the love between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius. Sienkiewicz was said to have been inspired to write the novel when visiting the Chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis, and the novel is strongly imbued with a pro-Christian sentiment, along with many detailed descriptions of the opulence and debauchery of Nero’s Rome. It is informative, exciting, and ultimately uplifting!

Beautifully written, an ancient world brought to life. The world of Ancient Rome, the corrupt court of Nero, the wit of Petronius, the values and principles of humanity through the belief in Christ could almost convert you. The message of love, faith and compassion for your fellow humans in the face of the indolent and vain. It resonates in today’s age and in any other. The morales, the reflections, the history is outstanding.
But I’m not a romance buff, and the unending descriptions of Vinicius’s inner feeling and turmoils time and again, so repetitive, makes this story far longer that I felt it needed to be. Might be a masterpiece for others. It was difficult for me to finish it because the brunt of the story was focused so much on the description of inner emotions of young lovers. Insights perfectly conveyed, just too many times for my taste.
It’s overall a great book. An epic this long, I would have liked more intrigue, more characters and side plots. There was so much going on in the background that was barely mentioned. It’s totally focused on the romance, which might be fine for others.
