In the second book of the suspense-filled Gentleman Bastard Sequence, hailed by George R. R. Martin as “fresh, original, and engrossing,” Locke Lamora faces a caper so death-defying that nothing short of a miracle will pull it off.

For some, only a prize worth dying for makes life worth living. . . .

After a brutal battle with the underworld, Locke and his sidekick, Jean, fled to the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But they are soon back to what they do best—stealing from the rich and pocketing the proceeds. Now, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the world’s most exclusive, most heavily guarded gambling house. But there is one cardinal rule: it is death to cheat at any game.

Brazenly undeterred, Locke and Jean have orchestrated an elaborate plan to lie, trick, and swindle their way straight to the Sinspire’s teeming vault. But someone knows the duo’s secret—and has every intention of making them pay for their sins. . . .

Critic reviews

PRAISE FOR SCOTT LYNCH

“A bright new voice in the fantasy genre.”—George R. R. Martin

Red Seas Under Red Skies

“Lynch hasn’t merely imagined a far-off world, he’s created it, put it all down on paper—the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up.”Booklist (starred review)

Red Seas Under Red Skies firmly proves that Scott Lynch isn’t a one-hit wonder. . . . It’ll only be a matter of time before Scott Lynch is mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Steven Erikson.”Fantasy Book Critic

“Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization.”Locus

“The kind of witty romp that reminds you exactly how much fun heroic fantasy is supposed to be.”SFX

The Lies of Locke Lamora

“Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven’t read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the Wind

I have seen a few people saying that they were a little hesitant or disappointed about this entry in the series, but I am flummoxed on why. Maybe it has to do with the sailing? I, for one, thought it was simply amazing! It added so much to the series and really opened the world up. There was everything good about the first book and more! :) I truly enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next one. Please do yourself a favor and, if you enjoyed the first one, read this one. You won't be disappointed. :)

Scott Lynch's world is absolutely flawless. The names the descriptions the city's the cultures - all works very seamlessly. I love the characters of Locke and Jean. I appreciated the Complexity of the story and the complexity of the characters asbwe get to know them better through all types of tribulations. Michael Paige the reader has become my favorite reader in the world. He is outstanding and his voice is so well suited to this story.

An excellent story with a heavily naval setting. I don't much about old boats and pirates but it made me feel like I wanted to be out on the water. Highly recommended!!
