For over twenty years, Don held the line along an altered path. The calls, the chaos, the politics—he could stomach it all for one reason: raising his daughter. But now, with that chapter of his life closed, the job’s cracks are harder to ignore. The ones who wear the uniform but don’t live up to it. The ones who lower the standard while good people burn out trying to hold it up.

As the weight of it all becomes unbearable, Don finds himself at a crossroads. Does he walk away, or battle an entire culture? Before he can decide, the choice is taken from him—and in the wake of his absence, those who truly understood what he stood for are left to pick up the pieces and ask themselves what comes next. A gripping, unflinching look at the cost of duty and the struggle to do what’s right—even when it feels like no one else cares.

For some, the job's image is everything. For Don, it was always about something more.

This book had me hooked from the very first page. I found myself setting aside my daily chores just to keep reading and find out what happened next. The author has managed something I don’t always experience in a book: he puts you right there in the moment—through the laughter, the pain, the anticipation—all of it.
At times, I almost wished he hadn’t done such a good job, because I completely gave up on using tissues. They’re too expensive! I resorted to a roll of toilet paper instead, and even joked with my family that we might as well bring out the mop and bucket—at least they’re reusable.
In all seriousness, this was an excellent read, and I truly hope to see more from this author in the future. Thank you to all the men and women who sacrifice their families daily to be there for someone on their worst day.

Utterly gripping from start to finish!

This was a terrific book. As someone new to EMS, I felt like the protagonist was teaching me how to be a better provider (and person). You can tell the author has lived much of this firsthand, and the rest of it secondhand. You can tell that he is incredibly knowledgeable about clinical practices and related ethics. He's also a terrific writer. All of this culminates to a highly enjoyable and engaging read which I've recommended to several first responders, and others, across the country.

An engaging and compelling read
