The action unfolds in the aftermath of a brutal coup and features different family members fighting for an intergalactic empire. On one side, we have Benjamin Adamant, who has murdered his sister and most of her family, violently seizing control of the Kingdom of Adamant and its vast network of star systems. Even though he is a brilliant military mind with plans layered upon plans, he believes he has secured absolute power, but what he failed to account for is that two of his sister’s children survived, and both are now prepared to challenge everything he has built.
On the other side, there is Nikolai Adamant, who has spent a long, exhausting year fighting his uncle on their homeworld. Pushed back behind the walls of the Kingdom’s strongest fortress, he prepares a desperate plan that risks the last of his forces in order to place him on his mother’s throne. At the same time, his sister, Lorraine Adamant, returns after traveling to Earth and beyond. She has forged powerful alliances and gathered a fleet of self-aware battlecruisers, and she arrives with her own plan to overthrow her uncle and restore the delicate balance between democracy and monarchy that once defined her people.
Pamela Almand, one of my favorite narrators in the entire audiobook industry, is at the helm of this interstellar adventure and, as expected, her performance is confident, clear, and emotionally grounded. Thanks to excellent pacing and character distinction, she enhances the story without ever overacting. This makes long listening sessions feel effortless and extremely enjoyable.
Regent’s Mate is a strong, character-driven science fiction audiobook with clear stakes, thoughtful themes, and outstanding narration. Whether you are already invested in the House Adamant series or discovering it mid-journey, I highly recommend this audiobook and I would be interested to continue the adventure in the future.
Great sci-fi
