You can run but you can't hide. During a camping trip to the Catskill Mountains, Charlotte's boyfriend Luke, a former soldier suffering PTSD, goes on a rampage, nearly killing Charlotte and her two friends. A year later, Charlotte is a graduate student in the small college town of Ashenville, North Carolina. Yet her new life is shattered when Luke, recently released from prison, shows up.

Overall I’m giving this a 3 because the narrator clearly doesn’t speak that fast, it was sped up and I had to actually slow it down. I usually listen to audiobooks at 1.10x. Otherwise I did enjoy her as the narrator. There was so much room for more development in this story, more background, ucharacter evolution, time frames could have been lengthened. I’ve never listened to an abridged book and this may as well been my introduction to one. I’ve enjoyed several JB books and this just wasn’t my favorite. I do see the potential for more with this piece, just sad it didn’t.

Would be better as a novel

I wanted to listen to this in one sitting. Both the story and the narration had me hooked immidiatly. This was the kind of story that kept me guessing beginning to end and the twists never stopped coming. As a twisty story vet, I pride myself on seeing what's ahead and in this case I was on my heels throughout. The narration was smooth and theatrical and truly made this tale come to life. I appreciated the authenticity of the female lead, made perfect through amazing writing and speaking. I only wish the story were longer. Jemery Bates never disappoints, his novellas are as good as they come.

A Stellar Story told By an Incredible Voice
