Growing up Amish and leaving the fold, Emma Gingerich left her Amish community in Eagleville, Missouri, at the age of 18. Her memoir Runaway Amish Girl: The Great Escape captivates even the timid listener. Disagreeing with the beliefs of Amish traditions and upbringing, the pressure became too much for her to bear. Forced to make a personal decision, Emma found the courage to leave the only life she had ever known. She had no idea the emotional turmoil she'd inflict on her family and friends. The emotional reactions of her parents, brothers, and sisters, were gut-wrenching. Considered no longer a daughter or a sister, temporarily exiled, Emma found a way to be free. Education became her priority as she found her place in the "English" world. This true story is a rare glimpse into the life of a brave young woman.

There’s nothing I didn’t like about this book. I hope she has success in life and I’m glad she was brave to do as she did. I wish that the ppl helping her had taught her more safety measures. But I’m glad she was still able to see her family as well. Being raised as a Jehovah’s Witness myself it was interesting to compare. My personal experience wasn’t bad. I did question many things for many years but my parents always used Gods word to show me why they came to the conclusion they did. And eventually when I did research I found that what they believed made sense and was reasonable. The talks we had were in a language we understood and they were refreshing and up building as well. Nothing of what Emma experienced with sitting for three hours listening to a language she didn’t speak. We are no part of the world too but in a different way. One that involves no politics since we vote for gods kingdom. And we dress modestly but not with uniform. I still think Amish are a peaceful people and she conveyed that. It just wasn’t the life she wanted to live though.

Reading like an Amish person might speak, I enjoyed learning the customs and lifestyle she walked away from.

Enjoyed learning

Very interesting, well written, and informative. Having escaped a similar situation, I could really relate, and the author often put words to things I've gone through in my recovery. That helped me. Thank you. I wish Emma continued happiness and I hope she is proud of how far she has come.

Very interesting. The determination of the author is amazing. Her will to be something other than submissive is extraordinary. I think about how many Amish women were held back from being who they could have been because of this cult. They have no life.
Very sad. Very happy for Emma!
