Nearly a decade ago, infamous literary 'it' girl Caroline Calloway created the proposal for a book she called School Girl while cutting up lines of Adderall with her Cambridge student ID. She promised followers and publishers alike that her life was a perfect fairytale up until the day she went to rehab.

As her 2015 book deal crumpled without a manuscript, Calloway was called a scammer, a fraud and a one-woman Fyre Fest, although during this time she managed to get and remain 'amphetamine-sober'. However, the chances of her ever producing a book beloved by fans and critics all but flickered out when her former best friend, Natalie Beach, published a viral tell-all in The Cut, falsely claiming to have been Calloway's ghostwriter all along.

A testament to the power of redemption, Scammer follows Calloway from her childhood dreams of becoming a famous memoirist, through her rise to internet fame at Phillips Exeter Academy and Cambridge University, to her catastrophic, Manhattan fallout with Natalie Beach, up until her most recent evolution into the beloved, impossible-to-ignore, downtown anti-hero that she is today.

I read the physical book a couple of years ago, but what a delight to hear it read by Caroline herself. She’s messy, she’s impossible, she’s adorable, she’s irritating, she’s smart, she’s the worst, she’s the best. Her prose is so over the top, sincere and unique. Does she want you to love her? Yes. She’s pretty clear about that. Will she change a single thing about herself to make that happen? Absolutely not.

Some people are interesting. Some people know interesting people. But it doesn't matter to me unless they write about their life. Thank God Caroline wanted to be a writer instead of finding a cure for cancer.

We can thank Natalie for one thing :) I got a chance to listen to you read your own book. That unhinged little tell all did one thing for me - got my nosey ass interested and invested. I even found her wedding registry. As a fellow 1991 born baby writer - I too now have the fire ignited in me to write again.

Besides that - listening to you read your book compares to only one thing - opening a giant box, containing another box, with even more boxes nestled inside. Each wrapped with different paper and a of course a matching ribbon. Your voice uncoils each sentence like a sparkling scroll, each word poised purposefully. A true delight and a delicacy to be part of your audience!

You are not the only 90s baby with the bizarre dream of writing about your life. Perhaps among us all - you are the fist and bravest - the one that finished your first book. Best of luck on all your future works, and congratulations on Scammer.
