Who better to fight back the darkness of the world than the one responsible for most of it?

Daylen, once known as the Great Bastard, the Scourge of Nations, Dayless the Conqueror, has lived in hiding since his presumed death. Burdened by age and tremendous guilt, he thinks his life is coming to an end. Unbeknownst to him he’s about to embark on a journey towards redemption where his ruthless abilities might save the world. Many battles await with friends to be made and a past filled with countless crimes to confront, all the while trying to keep his true identity a secret.

Indeed, it might be too much if not for the fabled power awaiting him.

Everfall is a world of perpetual day where the continents float in an endless sky. If one jumps from the continent they will fall for many hours before returning to the same place from which they fell. Skyships rule the air powered by shining sunstone and industrial darkstone. A legendary order of knights bears mystical powers which they use to hunt out the dreaded shade, monsters that regular people turn into if trapped in darkness for the length of a fall.

It is a world of enchanted swords, merciless monsters, mystical knights, and hard magic, filled with tales of wonder and adventure.

Following in the footsteps of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, Shadow of the Conqueror delivers rich characters, believable relationships, and an interesting, new magic system. The more the book went on, the more I was drawn in.

The First of Hopefully Many More

The sheer amount of technical detail applied to this story alone was enough to keep me hooked. The content and style of the story feels both new and familiar. I cant pull myself away from it.

How much I enjoyed this book was a real roller coaster. I went from loving it to rolling my eyes repeatedly.

First, the overall message of the story is excellent.

The main character is pretty baffling, however. I would describe him as petulant and often moronic, but the characters in the book constantly describe him as obviously mature, if prickly. Far too much of the main characters' development is told, rather than shown. His past, especially, makes little sense.

Showing that transformation would probably have been much more interesting, and the character really reflecting that transformation would have been beautiful.

Another pet peeve - it drives me crazy when a character in a book tries something obvious, like the main character does repeatedly, to discover they're the first and lauded are as a genius.

I found a lot to dislike in how the story was told, how characters were developed, how clumsily exposition was used to describe the world, and how immediately overpowered the main character was, but I still ended up enjoying they book as a whole.

There is a core of real goodness and a powerful message here and it's worth a listen.

Interesting concepts marred by missteps
