Internationally acclaimed author Joan Hiatt Harlow bases this riveting historical novel on real-life events. It is 1942, and 14-year-old Jill is spending the summer with her grandmother in the coastal village of Winter Haven, Maine. The U.S. is at war, and Jill hears rumors that German submarines - U-boats - are just off shore. Trying to ignore her fears, Jill notices suspicious activities in town. When she finds a carrier pigeon bearing the message Sonnabend iv, she's sure that something is wrong. The secret she uncovers will have her running for her life.©2003 Joan Hiatt Harlow (P)2004 Recorded Books, LLC Historical Fiction Military & Wars Fiction Historical Exciting Action & Adventure Mystery Mystery & Suspense Literature & Fiction

This was a moving story with so many situations of mixed feelings that we all face. It would be a good story for a young teenager

Authentic feelings of the characters

I liked the history behind this book. It gave a good base to develop the story. As a reader though, I have no patience for characters who continually do dumb things. I don't know if I missed a rating for this book but it should be classified as youth literature.
