It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the riveting story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign--the candidate herself.

Through deep access to insiders from the top to the bottom of the campaign, political writers Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes have reconstructed the key decisions and unseized opportunities, the well-intentioned misfires and the hidden thorns that turned a winnable contest into a devastating loss. Drawing on the authors' deep knowledge of Hillary from their previous book, the acclaimed biography HRC, Shattered offers an object lesson in how Hillary herself made victory an uphill battle, how her difficulty articulating a vision irreparably hobbled her impact with voters, and how the campaign failed to internalize the lessons of populist fury from the hard-fought primary against Bernie Sanders.

Moving blow-by-blow from the campaign's difficult birth through the bewildering terror of election night, Shattered tells an unforgettable story with urgent lessons both political and personal, filled with revelations that will change the way readers understand just what happened to America on November 8, 2016.

We all know how the story ends. I was hoping the book would give further anecdotes and tidbits and maybe dive in more to why the HRC campaign made the decisions it did.

Some of the writing was dramatic. The book is told from the perspective of Hillary's to lose so people like Bernie are described as "scowling" etc. but otherwise it flowed like a story.

The narrator was excellent

Jon Allen and Amie Parnes put you in the room of someone on the verge of being president. Love her or hate her, you ride next to Hillary on the roll coaster ride known as 2016 whose rails lead to the White House.
Every event, misstep and change of fortune is explained. You learn with the staff that they are children who are "not allowed to have nice things." The headlines of the election left many questions, and this book explains the Why?

Excellent book. Obviously knowing the outcome in advance does nothing but make the reader happier. I started book marking obvious bias but realized quickly I would have to bookmark almost the entire book. The authors want you to believe that sexism was a major disadvantage to mrs Clinton but as long as you’re a person who is not easily brainwashed you can ignore this subliminal message packed into the book. An enjoyable pleasuring read from beginning to end.

Comically biased

I purchased this book after a friend recommended it. I expected it to be an attack and/or behind-the-scenes dirt on the Clinton campaign. However, I found that it was a well researched narrative on what went on during the election of president Trump in 2016. It is very long so I probably will not listen to it again, but I do consider it "time well spent."
