One of the best-selling books of all time, with over 100 million copies sold in 44 different languages. The novel was extraordinarily popular upon its release and has never been out of print.

Follow the journey of Horace Holly and his ward, Leo Vincey, to a lost kingdom in the African interior. There they encounter a primitive race of natives and a mysterious white queen named Ayesha who reigns as the all-powerful "She", or "She-who-must-be-obeyed". In this work, Rider Haggard developed the conventions of the Lost World subgenre, which many later authors emulated.

This is the blueprint for the Indiana Jones series.

A classic in the truest sense of the word. Excellent story & outstanding prose. The reader did a great job with a lovely voice.

I initially bought and began listening because i actually liked the accent and way that the actor read the story - but i think something changed as the chapters wore on- and i started noticing more and more that the sentences were being read in a sing-song cadence, randomly emphasizing words in an ebb and flow that actually paused where there were no periods or commas, and gave a strength to random words that a normal person who was speaking and comprehending never would. Also there was generally a continuous pedantic forceful plodding to the rhythm with no natural emotional escalation or drama based on the changing narrative. At the halfway mark i decided to archive this one and find a better reader.

That aside - the story of adventure in the form of a travelogue filled with lots of fanciful speculation of magical pre-sci-fi reminded me a lot of the same framing and type as Jules Vernes’ Journey to the Center of the Earth. I didn’t really “love” either but think they are important works to read because they are so foundational to classic literature. If for no other reason than to learn the origin of the phrase “she who must be obeyed”!!!

Terrible sing-song reading

Hard to get through as every little thing seems to have to be described in detail. Still a good story.

Even though on audible, the reader was really terrible and uninspiring to the imagination, this vivid book captured my attention. For one written, so long ago with no predecessors it’s truly impressive. Compelling plot, and storyline. Totally bizarre characters. An almost believable fantasy. If you want to be transported back to the days of Flash Gordon and Tarzan, read this book.

Quite a yarn

Good story, interesting side characters, but slow pace, old language and narration make it hard to enjoy.

Solid short story
