The story begins in a melancholic Baker Street, where Holmes is steeped in his drug-induced introspection and Watson is haunted by grief and disturbing dreams. Their quiet existence is disrupted when Mycroft Holmes summons them to the Diogenes Club for a matter of grave importance.
There, Holmes and Watson meet with covert operatives investigating the resurfacing of a cult known as the Church of Starry Wisdom, notorious for its worship of a dark, unknowable cosmic entity referred to as the Haunter of the Dark. The cult, thought to have dissolved decades prior, appears to be active again, particularly in Epping Forest, where strange lights, disappearances, and otherworldly phenomena have been reported.
Holmes and Watson travel to investigate and find evidence of an extraterrestrial object that crashed in the woods, producing a bizarre, glowing fungus and deformed corpses. They recover a strange geometric gemstone—the Shining Trapezohedron—which serves as a dangerous psychic conduit to incomprehensible horrors from beyond time and space. Holmes, despite claiming to be free from past supernatural influence, struggles with its pull, hinting at a deeper connection with the dark forces involved.
