Sometimes the deepest evils wear the softest disguises…

Charles Shilling has always had a soft spot for the poor and downtrodden, so when his friend comes to him with the case of a missing runaway, he wants to give it his best. Unfortunately, there’s more on his mind than one missing girl. The case is fighting for dominance with the more pressing issues of his personal life, and a rather intriguing discovery he is honoured to have been brought in to investigate – by the only person in the world who can leave him star-struck.

Amelia Florin is enjoying the success of her new pen name, but the truth is catching up with her and it is getting harder and harder to avoid it. What’s worse, there’s a new reporter digging around them and their cases and, for the first time ever, Shilling doesn’t hate them. The last thing Florin needs right now is the Press snooping around and the pressure of protecting Charlie from getting too friendly with the untrustworthy yet cute girl with a notepad.

Can the detectives find the missing girl, or will their own problems catch them in a deadly web of lies?

The Pen and the Blade is the sixth book in the series of Shilling & Florin Mysteries. Set in an alternate and progressive universe, Shilling & Florin are on the case in a diverse and unique portrayal of London, defending the vulnerable and protecting the lost.

I was as entertained by this book as much as the others in the series. Shilling and Florin have become two of my favorite sleuths as Shilling's intelligence and ability to make brilliant deductive leaps were incredible and Florin's understanding and compassion were remarkable. I appreciated the humorous quips which lightened up the seriousness of their case. I thought Kate Haley's narration was terrific, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
