When a sudden illness confines Mr. Bennet to his sickbed, the cheerful tranquility of Longbourn is shattered. Duty compels Elizabeth to his side, but as she watches her father weaken, a quiet anxiety descends upon the entire household.
In the midst of this turmoil, Mr. Darcy unexpectedly returns to Hertfordshire. He comes not with grand speeches or apologies, but with the quiet competence of a gentleman. He mends fences, settles accounts, and offers a steadying presence, all while keeping his own counsel.
A fragile truce forms within the confines of Mr. Bennet’s library, built upon the propriety of morning calls and shared readings. With each passing day, as Darcy’s quiet service helps restore order, the Bennet family rediscovers a flicker of hope. Yet, the shadows of past offenses linger, and the stubborn remnants of pride and prejudice threaten to keep gratitude from blossoming into love.
Softened Hearts is a tale of second chances and quiet courage, exploring whether adversity can unite two souls long at odds. Can Elizabeth overcome her past judgments and entrust her future to the very man she once so vehemently refused?

The editing of this delightful variation was horrible! Sentences that were re-written were LEFT IN the story, and entire scenes were repeated in subsequent chapters (with better set-up). Some of the repetition in phrase does appear to relate (viscerally) the monotonous nature of caregiving, or the slow buildup to the sharing of true feelings… but not sure it was worth THAT many repetitions.

Edited phrases left in and repeated!!
