Zay’s ma always said his mouth would get him in trouble. Sure enough, it got him into his first and only fight, junior year. Expelled from his district, Zay understands that his only hope for redemption is to transfer to Broadlawn Alternative School.

Zay isn’t thrilled about the disgusting school lunch and classroom trailers at Broadlawn, and boarding with his aunt Mel and her live-in boyfriend isn’t the greatest. But he’d rather be there than in the city dealing with his estranged father, his overbearing mother, and the fallout from his fight. Besides, Broadlawn has Feven, the beautiful new student Zay is starting to get to know—and fall for.

Still, first love is rarely a fairy tale, and as Zay’s time in Broadlawn comes to an end, he learns that shaping yourself within a new place is a lot harder than letting it shape you.

What a beautiful story! HD Hinton is a bright light in YA fiction. Awesome characters and character development…great plotting as well.

i think this author is SO good at writing. he’s so poetic and he really gets me in there. i didn’t really like feven tho? i liked that she was smart, but i didn’t find anything else to really like about her. i think she was selfish, but i think it makes sense that she had to fight to be selfish after she was so selfless with her family. i think zay did so much for her, and she didn’t do enough back. i think zay deserves better than her. i hope he finds a new girlfriend. i’m glad zay found a happy ending. i wish we could have seen more about his experience being biracial, and i wish we could have seen him with his dad more. oh i also dont like zay’s mom—i think she was just a bad mom?? but she was realistic, unfortunately. but i’m glad everyone had a happy ending!
