Ali Smith
From the Man Booker short-listed author of Autumn, Winter, and Spring comes Summer, the highly anticipated fourth novel in her acclaimed Seasonal Quartet.
Here is the exciting culmination of Ali Smith's Seasonal Quartet, a series of stand-alone novels, separate but interconnected (as the seasons are), wide-ranging in timescale and light-footed through histories.

This novel is a challenge to review as I thought the plot was weak and I tuned out at times around half-way through as I didn't feel a connection with the newly-introduced characters as I had with the ones in prior novels. Also, after three novels of the same social and political issues being addressed it felt tired by this one's conclusion.
What I thought was great about it was bringing back characters from the previous three novels and continuing their story arcs. Some had their stories progressed from the prior novels and some we learned more about through flashbacks. All four of the novels effectively used the flashbacks and flashforwards to keep the narrative interesting to me. None were entirely linear and easy to follow. And Smith cleverly ties a number of her characters storylines together. I loved this. The last ninety minutes or so were excellent and I was intrigued to listen on to see how everyone would end up and how she was going to wrap up her sweeping Quartet.
Overall I really enjoyed the Seasonal Quartet and I think it would be fun to go back and read or listen to them all again knowing how they all eventually tie together and knowing what messages the author set out to convey.
A Fitting Ending for the Quartet
