Everyman Theo Hoover accidentally becomes Grand Oversee—humanity's supreme leader—managing the terraforming of Sunnyside, mankind's potential new home planet. But people are dying. And aliens are coming. And his brother is missing. And Kate Kingston of all people has been assigned his Chief of Staff. But chaos is only the beginning, as the fate of Sunnyside—and humanity—comes to rest in Theo's shaky hands.

With Sunnyside, Rob Dircks (#1 Audible Bestselling author of You're Going to Mars! and Where the Hell is Tesla?) tells a tale of First Contact, unlikely heroes, political twists and turns—and everyday people trying to figure out what it means to be "home."

The Black List describes it as "a distant future filled with irony, madcap characters, spaceships, a few bureaucratic conspiracies and an utterly unique voice with a pace and energy that moves at warp-speed.”

I’ve made a habit recently to only leave 5 star reviews if it’s genuinely a reading experience I can’t imagine not having experienced, usually one which leaves me changed as a result. Despite its hilarious and enthralling action, this is one such novel.

There truly is nothing like a gifted writer narrating their own work. Hearing him lose himself to a chuckle at his own quirky brilliant humour, lol so good. brought the hugest smile n chuckles.

Cannot believe I’ve never heard of this guy. I see comments all the time about “I lol’d so hard people stared at me on the bus”, and tbh thought it was AI or a turn of phrase. But holy moly this brought genuine chortles out of me without any choice in the matter. At once intriguing, intelligent, hilarious, informative, intriguing and witty. That’s no hyperbole, it really is an amazing ride.

Only downside is that it changes from genuinely moving scenes to dialogue dragging on for a bit in the middle. But the scenes that are moving? Wow. And most of these are with Aliens! Drawing snorts of laughter, philosophical musings, and moist eyes, all in the same chapter. That takes talent.

I normally say to each their own, but if you love witty, quirky writers, this is something you just have to experience.

Best. First Contact. Story. Ever

Always sweet but not saccharine

I love this author's books. Please do yourself a favor and listen to all of them. I also usually frown on authors reading their own books, but as I've mentioned in a previous review, I wouldn't mind if Rob Dirks read all of the sci-fi books I listen to. He is a stellar narrator.

Now, onto this book, Sunnyside. On the surface, it's just a damn good time. You care about the characters and they do get themselves into some shenanigans, but it's never overly stressful. I love hard sci-fi and I love sci-fi that qualifies as high literature, but sometimes I also just like to relax and go on a fun little journey. That's what this book is. And underneath all of that, there are definitely some lessons to be learned here, as well.
