Swedish Death Cleaning: A Gentle Path to Decluttering, Downsizing, and Legacy Planning.

If you've held onto belongings for years because every item feels like part of your story, you're not alone. Letting go can feel overwhelming, even when you long for peace, order, and more breathing room in your life.

That's why the Scandinavian tradition of death cleaning—a loving and thoughtful approach to decluttering and downsizing—has comforted people worldwide. It's not about throwing things away; it's about keeping what matters most, letting go of what doesn’t, and easing the burden on those you love.

In this book, you'll learn how to:

  • Release clutter without fear, shame, or guilt.
  • Use minimalism and home organization to simplify daily life.
  • Preserve your legacy while sorting sentimental treasures.
  • Find balance through Lagom, the Swedish philosophy of “just enough.”
  • Create space—physically and emotionally—for what brings joy.

With kindness as your guide, you'll discover that letting go is an act of love—for yourself and your family.

I came into this curious about the whole idea and ended up really liking the mindset behind it. What stayed with me most was how it made sorting through belongings feel thoughtful instead of cold or rushed. I liked that it focused on keeping the things that matter and being considerate of the people who may deal with everything later. For me, it turned decluttering into something more personal and meaningful, and that made the whole process feel a lot less overwhelming.

I used to keep a lot more stuff than I do now, because we were still writing letters, sending cards, saving newspaper articles, reading magazines, etc. I have a few boxes of this stuff, as well as journals, college papers, and a ton of books, none of which I'll ever read again. This book on Swedish Death Cleaning is right up my alley. I don't have a lot, but I dread moving, and I dread the idea of my being dead and my family having to sort through all this stuff. The book's main philosophy is that we should keep only what truly matters and let go of everything sentimental. "Truly matters" refers to items that offer meaning, usefulness, and legacy. The book offers a gradual, step-by-step approach, encouraging deliberate decisions about what to keep, donate, or discard. It uses a Swedish concept called Lagom ("just enough") to balance your possessions with your lifestyle. So let go of your guilt and shame, and let author Annika Sorenson help you create more clarity, peace, and space for the present!
