The Gospel of Judas is a Gnostic and apocryphal gospel that records some conversations between Jesus and the apostle Judas Iscariot, transcribed not by Judas himself, but by Gnostic Christian followers of Jesus. This gospel is recorded in a Coptic manuscript dating to the early 4th century; it has been suggested that the Coptic version is a translation of an older Greek edition, but there is no scholarly consensus on this point. The Gospel of Judas was composed between approximately 130 and 170 CE; its dating is based on the maturity of its theology, its assumption of knowledge of the canonical gospels, and the testimony of Irenaeus of Lyons. Lost for 1600 years, a manuscript, the Codex Tchacos, was found in a cave in Minya (Egypt) in 1978, and after several vicissitudes was restored starting in 2001. In 2006, the first translation was published by the National Geographic Society. Christianity Theology
