Max soars above the world . . . but in James Patterson's thrilling adventure, fantasy can come crashing down to reveal the nightmares of the Angel Experiment.

Maximum Ride and her "flock" -- Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel -- are just like ordinary kids, only they have wings and can fly. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time.

Angel, the youngest member of the flock, is kidnapped and taken back to the "School" where she and the others were experimented on by a crew of whack jobs. Her friends brave a journey to blazing hot Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare: fighting off the half-human, half-wolf "Erasers" in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives.

Along the way, Max discovers that her purpose is save the world. But can she?

Maximum Ride is the typical story of an older girl that takes care of the younger "siblings". (A lot like "The Boxcar Children") I downloaded this book because I saw a lot of positive reviews, and I was sorely disappointed. It is very possible that I would have enjoyed an unabridged version, because the story seemed a little choppy. The jokes about bodily functions will keep the kids entertained, but from an adult perspective, they get old fast. (My husband only got through 20 minutes) The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. It seemed as if the author had a deadline to meet and released the book before he was finished.

A book for pre-teens

I've already read the series, but the narrator really brings out the depth in the character. It's very well read.

An easy listen, and always a good story.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No, the story line is great and I love the way the story unfolds.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well, Max, of course. She's just so strong and powerful. And beautiful and she makes me laugh. Her backtalk is so funny!

What aspect of Evan Rachel Wood’s performance would you have changed?

Not really anything. I do wish that there were different readers for the different characters though. And I totally wish it wasn't abridged...the entire story is what makes it so great!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Totally! I think that if they stuck to the storyline and made believable wings and Erasers, the movie would be my favorite.

Any additional comments?

I really do wish that it wasn't abridged. It would have been so much better unabridged.

Totally wish is was unabridged!
