Kyle Mason runs his car off the road into the woods. He is drunk. He staggers to a house to ask for help when he sees a shadow through a front window. The shadow moves alone across the room. When it reaches a man in a recliner it falls into him and the man falls onto the floor. The shadow backs off and passes through a back wall. Kyle breaks into the man's house and tries to revive him but it is too late. The man dies.
Kyle dials 911 and waits for someone to show up. Meanwhile he comes across a blue book much like a diary. He opens it and reads that the man who had just died had recently discovered a strange pond in the woods not far from the back of the house. Kyle feels that he has found something important and hides the book outside so he can come back later and finish reading it.
When the police arrive Kyle is arrested but is released the next day. The death is ruled a heart attack, but Kyle knows better. Unfortunately, no one will believe his story.
Kyle meets Marissa Cloud, the daughter of the man killed. Kyle gives her the book he found of her father's. When she reads about the pond, she insists they go there.
Kyle and Marissa soon find themselves the target of a prominent scientist and owner of a large company. But that is not the worst of it. Somewhat later they will be confronted with robots led by a self-aware android. To survive they are forced to travel back and forth through time.
