In this twisted journey into the shadows of the Golden Gate, an inspector and an FBI agent must track down the source of an unknown drug, but their attraction and their own secrets keep getting in the way.

The streets of San Francisco aren’t as sunny as the city pretends they are. Inspector Lennon Gray has learned this the hard way, and it’s starting to wear on her. When a new case plunges her into the depths of the transient community, Lennon must once again face ugly truths about humanity.

Her new partner makes things a little easier, though.

Agent Ambrose Mars is charming—innocent, somehow, despite his own hard years in the field. The combination leaves Lennon fascinated and disturbed at the same time, and she’s even more drawn to him for it.

As they investigate the hallucinogenic drug that’s forcing homeless citizens into bizarre and dangerous role-plays, Lennon and Ambrose find their relationship intensified with every new twist. But when these revelations begin to uncover secrets she wasn’t prepared to know, Lennon will have to decide how much more she can take…before something important is taken from her.

Mia Sheridan’s The Broken Places is dark, twisty, and completely captivating. The suspense kept me hooked from beginning to end, but what really pulled me in was the emotional depth between Inspector Lennon Gray and Agent Ambrose Mars. Their chemistry and secrets made every scene feel alive.

The narration was excellent—bringing out the grit of San Francisco, the menace of the case, and the vulnerability of the characters. It made the tension sharper and the romance more intense.

If you enjoy romantic suspense with a haunting edge, this audiobook is a must-listen.

My tags for this thriller: realistic / original / page-turner / unpredictable / entertaining

Overall: 4 stars!
Story: 4.5 stars!
This detective novel had a very good gritty mystery with strong characters. I was on the wrong track for who the killer was, doh!

Learning about issues facing San Francisco's vulnerable members, the impact on the community, the special project that inspired the killer, and the sincere efforts of many sincere community members to help some of those hurt individuals heal was interesting.

Performance by 3 narrators:
Will Damron - 5 stars! He was very good at representing both male and female characters.
Nicol Zanzarella - 4 stars! Her acting was good overall, and I liked her style of doing both female and male characters. However, I found the rhythm of her delivery dragged oddly to my ears and that even listening on 1.5x didn't change that much. I'm not sure how she could fix this on future books, but I hope that she does somehow.
Leon Nixon - 5 stars! I really enjoyed his cameo style addition to the voice cast. It was a really cool decision to have a different actor play his part, bravo!

Final verdict: I highly recommend this one if you're looking for a good thriller to read.

Very good gritty detective mystery!

I usually love this authors books but I struggled to get through this one. The way the story unfolds is odd and confusing at times. The narrators were ok.
