From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a novel about a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed and danger that brings them together - and could tear them apart...

When professional house-sitter Lila Emerson witnesses a murder/suicide from her current apartment-sitting job, life as she knows it takes a dramatic turn. Suddenly, the woman with no permanent ties finds herself almost wishing for one...

Artist Ashton Archer knows his brother isn’t capable of violence - against himself or others. He recruits Lila, the only eyewitness, to help him uncover what happened. Chalking up their intense attraction to the heat of the moment, Lila agrees to help Ash try to find out who murdered his brother and why. From the penthouses of Manhattan to grand Italian villas, their investigation draws them into a rarefied circle where priceless antiques are bought, sold, gambled away and stolen; where what you possess is who you are; and where what you desire becomes a deadly obsession...

Critic reviews

“Roberts is performing at the top of her literary game…An addictive blend of sleek suspense and sophisticated romance that would make Hitchcock proud.”—Booklist (starred review)

“A pair of strong, commitment-averse protagonists, vividly drawn villains—a classy, stunningly beautiful, sociopathic assassin and a soulless recluse, in particular—an abundance of Fabergé egg history and a plot that keeps readers on edge add up to another classic for Roberts.”—Library Journal

“Sizzling suspense…Will keep readers riveted.”—Publishers Weekly

Engaging Blend • Intriguing Mystery • Excellent Character Voices • Historical Elements • International Settings

I'm normally a big fan of Nora Roberts' standalone books, but this one just didn't work for me. The hero, Ash, was meant to come across as the strong guy, the guy the family counts on. Instead, he comes across as controlling and condescending, and frankly, had Lila been my friend, I would have encouraged her to look for another prince among the frogs. Ash's persona was made worse by the narration, which interpreted him as pretentious, right down to the snooty nasal voice.

The other characters--Lila, Julie, and Luke--are actually lovely and I stuck it out to find out what happens to them. However, the story just didn't come together well. Julie and Luke sort of disappear about two-thirds of the way in to the story. Then the story just...ended.

There are many, many Nora Roberts' books are bring out again and again because listening/reading them is comforting, like hanging out with old friends: The Villa, Tribute, Montana Sky, the Three Sisters Island trilogy, Angels Fall, and the books written under the name J.D. Robb. The Collector, sadly, is a one-timer.

Definitely not one of Nora Roberts' best

I am not into witches and supernatural so I skip the Nora Roberts books that involve such. This was a romantic mystery that involved interesting characters, pets, and a pretty decent story. It held my attention and left me happily satisfied. Let's hope her alter ego JD Robb can do as well next time.

One of Nora's best in years

Would you try another book from Nora Roberts and/or Julia Whelan?

I would try anothe rbook from Norah Roberts, but with reservations, as this one was such a disappointment.

If you’ve listened to books by Nora Roberts before, how does this one compare?

This one is not one of her best. The plot was so unbelievable that i could not go with it. It was predictable from the start. The idea of 2 civilians trying to trap a criminal mastermind, and the police allowing it to occur is just too removed from reality. The faberge egg thing has been done many times before in literature, and there was nothing new here.

Do you think The Collector needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO

Lame and predictable

I was most definitely entertained but it wasn't quite up to parr with my other Roberts favorites. Lila was so frustrating and annoying at times it was eye rolling. Despite that it was long in parts but overall entertaining.

Would recommend to Roberts fans after they had other titles under their belt.

Enjoyable but not a fave

Better than 3.5 not quite a 4, but rounded up.

It's a good book and entertaining. I feel it was a little long, though.

Narrator:
Julia Whelan - 3.5 stars- She kept "forgetting" the voice she was using for the h's friend. It kept changing throughout the book, so it was distracting. Some of her voices were a little bit hard to listen to, like Jai's voice, but there wasn't much of it.

Good, but a little long
