The Discourses of Epictetus are a series of informal lectures by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus written down by his pupil Arrian around 108 AD. Four books out of an original eight are still extant. The philosophy of Epictetus is intensely practical.

This book is a priceless capsule of ancient thought with timeless application. It's a must-read for any student of stoicism or philosophy in general, or for anyone looking to receive thoughtful, practical perspective on how to both engage and not engage with life itself. The narration was subpar, but not so cumbersome as to challenge me to finish it. Aside from the occasional odd fluctuations in perceived emotion or the delivery of some parts seeming to sound not as a person would actually say that sentence or phrase, the biggest problem was the fifteen or so (give or take three) words/names that were mispronounced repeatedly through its entirety. This minor annoyance was a great in-book test of application of some of the books conveyed principles! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed The Discourses of Epictetus! Even though it was written centuries ago, the wisdom feels so relevant today. Epictetus focuses on what we can control, how to handle challenges, and how to live with integrity. The lessons are simple but powerful, and I found myself highlighting so many quotes. If you’re looking for a practical and no-nonsense approach to life, this book is a great read!

This book was very great! I’ve read a few on stoic philosophy & this one surely stands to be up there for me!

A classic discourse on stoic philosophy!

The guy they got to narrate this book is terrible, it sounds like he can barley read, he can't maintain consistent volume and lacks the authority in his voice to portray a stoic. I recommend you find a different version with a better narrator.

Terrible Narrator for this title,
