In a place where medicine was used to harm, she vowed to heal.

Occupied France, 1942: Psychiatrist Dr. Adélaïde Hautval is arrested for defending a Jewish family. When she’s deported to Auschwitz and assigned to the women’s infirmary, she’s ordered to assist with sterilization experiments under SS doctors—including the infamous Josef Mengele. As the line between healing and harm blurs, Adélaïde makes a choice that could cost her everything.

London, 1964: Two decades later, one of the Nazi doctors is on trial—and Adélaïde is the key to exposing the truth.

Based on a remarkable true story, The Doctor of Auschwitz is a haunting and unforgettable novel about choosing humanity over survival and finding the courage to speak out.

Perfect for fans of The Midwife of Auschwitz and The Nightingale!

I enjoyed listening to this beautifully narrated true story. It brought alive the strength and resilience of women who took a stand to do what was right, and risked their own lives in order to make those more comfortable during the holocaust. Even the smallest gesture of kindness could’ve gotten them killed and they took the risk anyway. Adelaide, the main protagonist gave up her freedom and livelihood again and again to speak up for others. Even with the constant threat of death, she never backed down, never turned her back on others and always did her best to do what was right. She was one of the unsung heroes of the Nazi death camps. The author, Kit Sergeant does a wonderful job of bringing to life this horrific period in history, in a way that we can learn and understand how they survived.

A story of heroism from within the death camps of WWII.

This is a fascinating story of a non-Jewish prisoner's experience of the evils carried out on Jewish prisoners of the Nazis in WWII. Narration is excellent.

Fascinating and Tragic

I enjoyed this story and the narration so very much. I binge listen to it over the course of a day and a half, I connected with the characters so much. It's the kind of story with characters that you can relate to, imagine being friends with and hope that you have the courage of Adelaide and so many others. Sadly the themes and horrors of this book still resonate in 2026.
