From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus comes a novel about a struggling writer who gets his big break, with a little help from the most famous woman in America.

After years of trying to make it as a writer in 1990s New York City, James Smale finally sells his novel to an editor at a major publishing house: none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jackie--or Mrs. Onassis, as she's known in the office--has fallen in love with James's candidly autobiographical novel, one that exposes his own dysfunctional family. But when the book's forthcoming publication threatens to unravel already fragile relationships, both within his family and with his partner, James finds that he can't bring himself to finish the manuscript.

Jackie and James develop an unexpected friendship, and she pushes him to write an authentic ending, encouraging him to head home to confront the truth about his relationship with his mother. Then a long-held family secret is revealed, and he realizes his editor may have had a larger plan that goes beyond the page...

From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus comes a funny, poignant, and highly original novel about an author whose relationship with his very famous book editor will change him forever--both as a writer and a son.

One of my favorite books in the past few years. The narrator brings true personality and emotion to this author’s story. I laughed and cried in the same paragraphs many times throughout. I will follow whatever this author writes…and I hope that means many, many more books to come!

Beautiful story, Beautiful performance.

*The Editor* by Stephen Rowley is an incredible story that captivated me from start to finish. While I can't speak to its historical accuracy, the narrative is profoundly engaging. It follows a young gay journalist who gets the chance of a lifetime to interview one of his idols, a woman who is one of the most famous figures in modern American history.

The moments of humorous awkwardness are written so well that you can almost feel the discomfort yourself. The poignant moments are so soulful, they moved me beyond words. And the scenes of grief are universally relatable yet beautifully crafted.

At its core, this is a story about family, acceptance, and love in all its complicated forms. I highly recommend giving this book a read—you won’t be disappointed!

Jon McVey lives with sporadic (adult-onset) inclusion body myositis (IBM), a progressive and disabling muscle disease. In spite of many research studies designed to treat IBM, none have shown efficacy or effectiveness. Therefore, patients and their families have to learn to adapt to and live with IBM. It’s not an easy journey. McVey memorializes his, his wife’s and children’s journey with humor, historical references and lessons for city planners, the medical community, patients and families.

Important memoir about disabling disease
